International FASD proclaimed at the City Hall, Council Chambers on August 22, 3:30 p.m.


Proclamation Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
September 9, 2011
WHEREAS: children are our most important resource and it is our responsibility to care for, nurture and protect them; and
WHEREAS: individuals with FASD in Wetaskiwin and surrounding areas face the risk of developmental disabilities, early school drop-out, homelessness, addictiveness, trouble with the law and mental illness; and
WHEREAS: FASD is a preventable disability and a national health concern for individuals, families, communities, and society-at-large;
WHEREAS: in order to reduce the incidence of FASD, it is essential communities provide women and their partners with support and information; and
WHEREAS: parents, professionals, individuals living with FASD, and other people will observe International FASD Day on September 9, 2011
THEREFORE: I, Bill Elliot, Mayor of Wetaskiwin, on behalf of the Wetaskiwin City Council and the people of our city, do hereby proclaim September 9, 2011 as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Day in the city of Wetaskiwin. I encourage everyone in our community to act with compassion and understanding towards those individuals whose lives were affected by alcohol before they were born and to support pregnant woman, and those who may become pregnant, to have a healthy pregnancy.

WANTED INGREDIENTS (fruit juice) for Mocktail Recipes


The Shirley Temple Recipe
½ c. orange juice             1tbsp grenadine syrup
½ c. sprite/7-up               maraschino cherry
Combine juices, pour grenadine in.

Ginger Pear Shake
284 ml. can of pears
1 L. Milk
Cold ginger ale
Put Pears and milk in a blender.  Blend until smooth.  Stir in remaining milk and divide mixture among 6 tall glasses.  Add 2 ice cubes to each glass and fill with ginger ale.

Communications in the community

August 14: Distribution of bookmarks at the library (Bookmarks designed by Stacy) Approx. 100 every week

August 15: Messages written on liquor bags (by Horizons Centre, patrons at the library, Lisa from Nutritional Beginnings) Liquor bags given by Dominique and the bags given back to liquor stores by Dominique on Fridays. Approx. 100 every week

August 22: Proclamation at the City Council (delegation had members from Horizons, Catholic Social Services, and the library) Delegation led by Stacy

August 23: Liquor bags given to teachers (CB McMurtle School)

August 24: Invitation cards distribution begins at the library


August 25: Word of Mouth promotion at the University of Alberta's Children and Family Services presentations


August 26: Invitation cards distributed at the library's book sale and given to Victim Services

August 26: Volunteers picked up the cards and bags and dropped them off at the Seniors Centre

August 27: Liquor bag campaign, FASD baby with physical differences and information distribution at the Arts and Agriculture Fair

August 29: Wanted ingredients for mocktails packages distributed to liquor stores

August 30: Requested Friends of the Library to help on Sept 9 and to supply ingredients

August 31: Free mocktails at pubs/bars in Wetaskiwn poster distributed

August 31: Proclamation published in Wetaskiwin Times

September 1: Invited and presented FASD gathering event at Touchstone Place

September 2: A patron at the library said that she really appreciated the library doing such type of event.

September 6: Dropped off the liquor bags with messages to the liquor stores. Picked up bags with messages from schools.

September 7: Promoting the event at the Parade of Programs.
